  In a quiet North Carolina town 22 miles south of Raleigh, as a young 9-year-old girl, Paige King Johnson spent her days imitating the styles of Loretta, Patsy, Waylon, and Merle. Having a grandpa as her biggest fan also meant receiving the gift of her first guitar – a baby Taylor - and enrolling in lessons. After her grandpa passed, the bright-eyed dreamer carried on hismemory by taking her newfound discovery to local fairs, festivals, and any other stage she was allowed to stand on. As she grew older, Johnson added “opening act” to her resume, supporting chart topping artists like Kane Brown, Oliver Anthony, Randy Houser, Joe Nichols, Gabby Barrett, Clint Black, Diamond Rio, Scotty McCreery, Tracy Byrd, Kylie Morgan, Lonestar, Neal McCoy and more.

Olivia Ellen Lloyd will try anything once. From flight attendant school in Dallas to producing theater in New York and teaching in Guatemala, Lloyd sought adventure but struggled to find a greater sense of purpose - until she found her way back to music. Channeling that restlessspirit, she writes songs that dig deep for hope in the face of hardship. Her debut album, Loose Cannon, has been streamed over 1 million times while she has been crossing the country playing shows, winning songwriting contests (like Kerrville New Folk in 2023) and generally eatinglife down to the rind. precise, disorienting, and wide open. Imbued with a quiet force, these are songs for early mornings or late nights, when reflection becomes reckoning. The indie songwriting project of North Carolina–based artist Canon Pence, Twilark emerges from the crossroads of southern melancholy and gothic folk. Pence is a self-taught musician whose relationship with the art form has long been private. What began as a quiet personal exercise turned into something more urgent, more focused—a way of unburdening. Twilark took shape gradually, without a clear starting point or defined plan. Both of Dennes’s parents were professional musicians; his mother Barbara was a singer, and his father was a bassist and a drummer.   

From the age of 5, he started playing drums. His mother used to take him along to her band rehearsals, and she always told the story that one day Dennes just picked up a set of drumsticks and was keeping perfect time with the drummer.    

At 19, he started writing songs and was frustrated that he had no way to express them, so he bought a keyboard and taught himself how to play by ear, listening to Prince, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and others. He also started performing live with bands as a singer.   

Over the years, he taught himself both guitar and bass guitar. Dennes says he tried the saxophone “but it sounded like a hit a goose with a scooter.”   

While I was teaching himself to play other instruments, he began writing short stories and then screenplays.  

Unfortunately, he says he never made any real inroads to making a career out of either. In 1998, he cut his long hair and got a real job, joining the FBI, and put aside his musical and writing ambitions. But he quietly kept doing them as hobbies over the years, recording all of his ownmusic.   

In 2021, he was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer and underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments for seven weeks. Amazingly, the doctors saved his life and his voice, but said he would probably not be a singer anymore.  

 God works in mysterious ways, they always say… because of the treatments, his voice timbre changed, and it gave him a wider range of expression. So, he started using it for a new purpose: narrating audiobooks.    

Flash to 2025, now retired from the FBI, he has narrated three audiobooks for an author’s trilogy of stories, and is currently recording the audiobook for his own debut novel, Neckbeard the Awesome Pirate.

Stan Lang is the alias under which Oregon native Kevin Johnston writes. He lives in Burns Oregon, a little town in the middle of the southeastern corner of the Oregon HighDesert. For 23 years he has been a generalist country doctor to approximately 7,000 people who live in a county roughly the size of Massachusetts. 

In the late 80’s, he wrote music and played in a college hard rock band, but he says, “when we never got the magical call up to the big leagues,” he eventually decided he should spend moretime studying and less time playing. 

He got married, sold his music gear, had 4 kids, worked as a social worker, went back to medical school, then ended up in the country as a doctor. 

 About 10 years ago his best friend had a cardiac arrest at the gym and he was the Emergency physician on-cal. Unfortunately, he was unable to resuscitate his friend. The grueling nature of taking care of friends and neighbors and losing his best friend and then having to tell his wife and children left him lost and in a very dark place. 

He started playing music again, to work through his grief, and slowly started performing and writing again, this time from the perspective of pain lived and witnessed rather than therebellious superficial complaints of youth. 

During COVID, he decided that he would finally record in a proper studio and created the album "Super Hero Blues." He continues to practice medicine, performs in a couple of coverbands, and performs his original music. He writes intermittently when the mood strikes, and continues to play to keep a modicum of sanity.

Kate (fiddle) and Brendan (cello) first started talking about making an album together during the bright, shimmery post-pandemic summer days of 2021. Despite living on opposite sides of the country (Kate is based in Portland, OR, and Brendan is based in Brooklyn, NY) they had built a musical connection through their shared appreciation of innovation and groove. Over the next several years, they performed at venues on both coasts of the US, playing tunes and singing songs from American Old-Time, Irish, and other traditional music styles. They also began writing and performing original material, much of which became the tracks for this album. Kate wrote the title track, One Year Since, in her basement during the pandemic. She recorded a voice memo of the tune and then forgot about it, only to discover it again one year later when many things about the world and her own life had changed. Fiddle in the Attic is for Kate’s fiddle, which was found in an attic in Scotland after anticipating its next tune for who knows how long. By December of 2024, Kate and Brendan were in the studio in rainy Portland with mostly original material written in the old-time fiddle style, one song Brendan composed from a poem, and one song by Emmylou Harris and the McGarrigle sisters. One Year Since is Kate and Brendan’s first EP as a duo.

We talked about their latest album “Home Grown,” how Cole serves as the band leader and band member, and their performance on the famous Mountain Stage! 

Rooted in tradition yet driven by a restless New York energy, Cole Quest and The City Pickers are carrying bluegrass forward with wit, warmth, and originality. Led by dobro player, songwriter, and vocalist Cole Quest — grandson of folk icon Woody Guthrie —the band has carved out a singular place in today’s roots music landscape.   

Their latest album, Homegrown (Jalopy Records, 2025), produced by Grammy Award–winning engineer Steve Rosenthal, brings the band’s journey into full focus. The record weaves four new originals with reimagined takes on songs by John Hartford, Peter Rowan, and Woody Guthriehimself, linking Cole’s own creative voice with his grandfather’s enduring legacy. No Depression hailed it as “an album that deftly moves the legacy of Woody Guthrie along in all the right ways.” Critics like Songlines (UK), Glide Magazine, and the Berkshire Eagle have noted how the bandhonors its lineage while commanding its own path.  Formed by friends with a shared love of bluegrass, Quest first pulled the Pickers together in 2017 to record their debut self-titled project at the legendary Magic Shop studio. Jake Cassman's music echoes the raw energy of indie rock, the artful melodicism of power pop, and the thoughtful and vulnerable songwriting of the best Americana. Jake began playing piano at age five, and started writing music soon after. He loved Elton John from an early age -- but when his teacher couldn't show him how to play Green Day songs, he began teaching himself; and when he realized he wanted music to be his career, he left an Ivy League school to pursue it. Since then he has worked as a dueling piano player, musicaltheater composer, improv and sketch comedian, and podcast producer (just to name a few gigs). He is also a published academic and a school music educator, while still finding time to play pickup basketball most weekends and try new beers based on the silliness of their names.   

Cassman has contributed performances and songs to various political and social justice causes, and his inventive, award-winning music videos bring the stories and ideas from his songs to life in unforgettable ways. His previous project, Drunken Logic, contributed the song and video"What A Beautiful Morning!" to the 2016 anti-Trump compilation 30 Days, 30 Songs alongside R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, and more. Los Angeles country artist Rosy Nolan’s upcoming LP Main Attraction (out Oct. 17) is steeped in Americana roots, Western swing, honky tonk, and old-time country, paying homage to the great American records of the 1920s–1940s. The album is drenched in heartache and longing—core themes that have defined Nolan’s songwriting throughout her career. 

Nolan is a California girl through and through. Born and raised in the East Bay—first in San Francisco, then Berkeley and Oakland for middle and high school. “I’ve lived in California most of my life. It’s in me, and it comes through in my music,” she says.Her songs draw richly from the state’s varied landscapes, weaving metaphors ofhighways, desert, ocean, and redwoods. Raised by Bay Area activists, with a poet mother and a father who fought injustice, Nolan’s upbringing shaped her fierce commitment to advocacy. “Activism remains a constant for me,” she says. “I use my voice to fight for women’s rights, have lobbied bills with the ACLU, and recently, I’ve been protesting the I.C.E. raids in Los Angeles.” 

In the early 2000s, New York pulsed with the techno-infused retro synth-pop and cool-kid fury of electroclash. Nolan found herself swept up in this vibrant club scene, but the nonstop partying and drinking eventually took their toll. Hitting rock bottom, she embraced sobriety through atwelve-step program and began focusing inward.Seeking something more organic, Nolan honed her craft as a singer-songwriter, forging a sound rooted in traditional folk. She immersed herself in the records of Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, as a new wave of alt-country artists helped spark a fresh scene.

Will Wesley is a Country Rock and Americana artist. A storyteller whose sound blends a soulful edge with country rock energy into heartfelt storytelling. Born in Baker, Louisiana, Wesley was raised with a rebellious spirit and a love for music inspired by his father’s guitar. By age 15, he was sneaking into bars to perform with a beat-up six-string and a fire that would soon define his music career. 

He paved his path in the Baton Rouge blues scene, performing and touring alongside with legendary figures. He served as Grady Champion’s Music Director for five years. His talent earned him two International Blues Challenge regional victories and a reputation as one ofLouisiana’s fiercest young guitarists. 

 Today, Wesley tours across the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia, performing everywhere from intimate listening rooms to international stages, including the Switzerland International Country Music Hall of Fame and the Jackson, Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.  

 He shared stages with many including Alabama, RVSHVD, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Redd Volkaert, When In Rome, Old Crow Medicine Show, Scotty McCreery, Hailey Whitters, and shared international stages with Swiss Rockabilly Star - Florian Fox, collaborating on Will's singles, “Wasted Again” and “Time's Catching Up To Me.”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jesse Daniel Edwards released Requiem Mass / Catechism En Masse, his boldest and most incendiary release yet, this past summer. The project represents a searing, spiritual, and political reckoning. It is not an album meant to passively stream in the background. Formed in the early '90s and made up of frontman Adam Czeisler, guitarist Rich Credo, bassist Cole Peterson, and drummer Chris Friel, Sweet Water has spent decades making music together grounded in friendship and a shared love of rock and roll. "We love making music – and love thechallenge to make art that reflects who we are and where we are," says Rich. "I think the true strength of our band is our core friendship and its longevity," adds Adam. "Rich, Cole, and I went to the same schools in both elementary and high school. Chris and Cole have known eachother since they were kids."The band took a new approach to recording this time. "From the start, we had a very different mindset for making this record," says Adam. "We wanted to be way more ambitious, take way more risks to try and stretch the songs beyond what we had done before, because 'why not? If not now, then when?' Nashville based folk duo Haunted Like Human - Dale Chapman (they/them) and Cody Clark (he/him) - will release a new album, American Mythology, this fall.    

Mythology evokes images of gods, titans, demons, and beasts of every kind. Yet, it’s the spark of humanity that keeps us telling and retelling myths. It’s these stories of seduction, inheritance, and hubris that Nashville-based folk duo Haunted Like Human rekindle in the 14 songs on theirthird album American Mythology, out October 2025. Vyvyan Hammond has been writing songs for as long as she can remember. “When I was four, I’d ride around on my BMX making up songs in the bush, singing to the trees,” she says. “It was just how I made sense of the world.”

 Cyrena Wages fell in love with music on the country backroads between Millington and Shelby Forest, two small towns just north of Memphis. Her father, the hometown judge, drove her to school every day in a 1967 gold Cadillac with the license plate “ROBN HD” on the back, an homage to the underdog ideology, and a conceptual through line of her debut 2024 album,Vanity Project. 

The first single off Wages’ Sophomore album, produced by Johnny Black and co-written with Black and Amie Miriello, was released in May 2025. 

Cyrena says, “I didn’t go in to make this new record feeling unheard. I didn’t have pent up weight, or unarticulated pain. I feel like I wrote Vanity Project from a wound, and I am writing this project from a scar. With her lyrically driven songs, Rachel McIntyre Smith’s comfort twang music reminds listeners of the classics while also adding a relevant and fresh perspective. 

From a very young age, her mother, an English teacher, encouraged Rachel to write. She recalls, “I was fascinated with rhyming and pretended to not understand it so my mom would keep explaining it to me.” Rachel won several awards for her poetry and even won a scholarship to college for one of her short stories. As Rachel progressed in music, she started combining her two passions of music and writing.  

Rachel began working with producer Dran Michael in the fall of 2020. Since the beginning of their partnership, Rachel has released multiple singles and her debut EP, Glory Daze, and her sophomore EP Honeysuckle Friend which have been featured on several media outlets including BBC Radio,Grady Smith’s Youtube Channel, Holler Magazine, and Spotify’s Fresh Finds Country, WDVX, and WMOT.  The Blue Ridge Mountains wind through eight states over astretch of 615 miles. In Virginia, they overlook Franklin County south ofRoanoke. Back in the day, bootleggers would refer to the area as “The MoonshineCapital of the World” due to its perfect placement to export contraband. Thesedays, the textile mills of Rocky Mount and other once cozy-towns have shutdown, leaving minimal opportunity and a lot of hopelessness. At the bottom ofthe Southwest Virginia foothills half-a-mile from the nearest neighbor, ColbyHelms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father. He hunts andtakes care of his mom. He also pens the kind of raw and real country music thatcuts to the bone. After signing to Photo Finish Records, he introduces himselfwith a series of 2023 singles and his forthcoming debut album.  

 Joined by his band The Virginia Creepers, he cut his teeth with countless gigs around the area. He also shared a series of arresting D.I.Y. performance videos on YouTube, including “Smoke and Flames.” With starkly honest songwriting and a sharp angular twang to his vocals, he struck adynamic balance between country storytelling, blue grass energy, and blues power. It all happened on October 1, 2024, at the Juke Joint Chapel – in front of a live audience. Wyze and the five-piece Tellers put on their finest show to date right there on the surprisingly grand stage. (Never mind that it was their first show.) History tells us the now-cozy Juke JointChapel music hall has been reincarnated. Long ago, the place attracted a much different crowd. And the sounds it emitted? Might different, too. We're talking the whirring , whizzing, straining refrains of different kind of "music" – the sound of cotton being ginned.   

LIVE in CLARKSDALE, the soundtrack and video show, features eight of the band's original radio-charting "Stuck in the Mud" album studio singles, including their RMR #1 hit "Back to Clarksdale"(Here's the Set List.) Plus, it features two all-time blues standards from the 1920s: "How Long, How Long Blues" and "Nobody Knows you When You're Down and Out" – the first made famous by early blues recording stars Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell with their 1928 recording.   

Along with the soundtrack and live show video, the combo CD/DVD set features a 50 minute "all things Clarksdale" documentary filmed in the Delta and hosted and produced by Christopher Wyze.   

The bonus content film, “Wyze in Clarksdale,” takes viewers on a journey through musically historic Clarksdale and surrounds. Featuring the cinematography of Clarksdale filmmaker Coop Cooper, it includes a look at the fabled Crossroads, where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the devil. It takes viewers for a visit to the historic train depot platform in nearby Tutwiler, where W.C. Handy first heard the blues in 1903.

Now working under her own name, Stacey’s solo work fuses her love of country, Americana, rock, pop, folk, and standards. Recorded and produced by Evan Redwine in Nashville and BrianDeck in Chicago, Stacey’s EP DUSK highlights the uneasy feeling of uncertainty in a new day that can also bring hope of springing out of the paralysis of choice into action. From “Think of You” to “Insomnia,” Stacey is fully awake, hopeful for tomorrow, and happy to get this project outinto the world.

 Eugene Rice (who called in from work at Malibu Music) and Joseph Perez of The American Mile sat down with us to talk about their growth as a band, their line up changes since 2018 and their sophomore album “American Mile.” We chatted about the uphills and downhills of being a band and excessive touring—with over 200 shows a year! The other two members of the band are Dezmond Saunders and Colton Miller.   

Road dogs at heart, American Mile plays over 200 shows a year and is currently in the middle of a 40+ city tour. Every time they get the train back on the tracks, something would derail it … again. But they never stopped. They never slowed down, even when they should’ve. They just keep on going. All gas and no brakes. And with every drum hit, guitar strum, and vocalline, you can hear the hard work and sacrifice poured into this album that documents the sacrifices, strength, and resilience it takes to keep a band together and to be a functioning human in the 2020s. 

 Made up of four young, seasoned studio and touring musicians, all of whom left their hometowns in the Midwest to come to Los Angeles to pursue music, the band started with a strong rock foundation and found themselves embracing the soul and storyteller songwriting of country music, finding those sweet spots that blend heavy-hitting riffs with soulfullyrics.

Lisa Crawley is the indie-pop artist who makes vulnerability sound effortless. A multi-instrumentalist, in-demand session player, and songwriter, she has built a career spanning multiple continents, four APRA Silver Scroll Award nominations, and countless live performances. Beyond the recording studio, Lisa’s talents extend to the stage. She starred as ‘GIRL’ in the Tony Award-winning musical Once and co-created Elizabeth with Bullet Heart Club (Daffodils), agig-theater production blending her original songs with storytelling.

 Calista Navarro, also known as Cali, is a singer-songwriter, actress, and storyteller from Elsa, Texas. Cali grew up with music all around her, from the classic rock, country, and pop played in the car on family road trips, to the soundtracks she heard while watching Mexican soapoperas on TV. It is no surprise that she developed a love of performance early on and was singing and dancing on stage in school assemblies by the time she was three years old. Two years later, Cali began taking voice lessons, marking the start of her formal education in music that continues to this day. Since embarking on her musical journey, she has learned to play the ukulele and acoustic guitar, and compose original songs inspired by artists she loves, suchas Taylor Swift, Janis Joplin, and Etta James.   

In 2022, Cali was invited to the PBS broadcast of Reading Rainbow, where her original song “Reading is Magical” was featured during the live premiere event. Other notable performances include singing the national anthem at sporting events and appearing in showcases for music schools across Texas and in New York City. In the summer of 2023, she had theopportunity to open for KidzBop during their Never Stop Live Tour at major venues such as Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, Toyota Music Factory in Irving, and ACL Live at The Moody Theater in Austin.

 Ana Cristina Cash is a Nashville-based American singer-songwriter who was originally raised in Miami, Florida by her Cuban parents who moved to the United States in the early 1960s during the onset of the revolution. Growing up listening to a multitude of genres, Cash’s sound wasinfluenced by an eclectic array of inspiration from Country, Pop, improvisational Jazz, and Latin music. Writing directly from the heart, the singer-songwriter’s recordings exhibit a broad vocal range, spanning from an expressive and resonating contralto to a soaring coloratura soprano, otherwise known as the “whistle register.” Ana earned her bachelor’s degree in journalismfrom Florida International University and her master’s degree in creative writing and literature from Harvard University.  

Ana Cristina is currently preparing Part 1 and Part 2 of EP releases of songs that incorporate her country music with pop sensibilities and Latin influences. She will follow up the two EP releases with a full expanded album edition including several new tracks. She is a frequent performer on the Grand Ole Opry, The Bluebird Café, 3rdandLindsley, major sporting events and isan active part of the thriving Nashville music scene.

Quote the Raven, consisting of Jordan Coaker and Kirsten Rodden-Clarke have been performing together for over a decade. Born in the bluegrass of Kentucky and raised on Wyoming’s high plains, Shelby Means is one of the foremost bassists in bluegrass, with nearly two decades of experience in bluegrass, folk, rock, Americana, and country outfits. Now based in Charleston, SC, during her tenure in Nashvilleshe was a member of the incredibly impactful GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass band of all women, Della Mae. With Della Mae and others she has traveled to more than 20 countries around the world spreading musical diplomacy.  

  Means is also one half of roots duo Sally & George with her husband and collaborator, Sol Driven Train’s Joel Timmons. With Timmons, Mary Lucey, and Billy Cardine, she co-founded another group, Lover’s Leap, a genre blurring, heart-led Americana band. Means is a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, with whom she gained her first GRAMMY win for their 2023album, City of Gold. She’s also received more than a handful of awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association for her work with Della Mae and Golden Highway. 

 Means is a driving player with a deep pocket, a singular stage presence, and a magnetic, centered approach to the upright bass. Beyond her work on the instrument, she’s also an accomplished songwriter and a heartfelt vocalist whose voice is rooted in tradition while authentically her own.  San Diego-based artist Gayle Skidmore is set to release her highly anticipated neoclassical album, The Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster, on April 4, 2025. Known for her hauntingly beautiful piano compositions and emotive performances, Skidmore’s new album is a deeplypersonal and historically rich exploration of one of America's most tragic events: the collapse of a railroad bridge in Ashtabula, Ohio, in December 1876. The disaster claimed the lives of 92 people, including Skidmore’s relative, renowned hymn writer Philip P. Bliss.This eleven-track album is an evocative journey through both the human tragedy and the historical significance of the event, blending delicate, intricate melodies with deeply emotional compositions. Skidmore’s piano work captures the sorrow, resilience, and humanity at the heart of the disaster. Kolton Moore & The Clever Few have announced their sixth studio album A Place That I Call Home, due out September 26. Produced by GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang (JasonIsbell, Margo Price), the new album finds the band navigating adulthood while taking stock of hard-earned life lessons along the way.  

Recorded in full-band takes at Ross-Spang’s Memphis studio in less than five days, A Place That I Call Home captures Kolton Moore & The Clever Few's electrifying mix of rock, blue-collarstorytelling and Texas-sized country hooks. Lyrically, the songs here are mined from Moore’s personal experiences, from wild teenage nights and mental health journeys to the joys of fatherhood.   Mark Fredson's musical journey spans more than two decades, marked by a dogged commitment to the pursuit of making music for music's sake. Hailing from Port Angeles, Washington, Fredson was just a sophomore in high school - when he signed his first record deal.  Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Hernando, Mississippi, a small town along the Tennessee-Mississippi line, KC was surrounded by music for as long as she can remember. Named after KC and the Sunshine Band and raised on the greats like Led Zeppelin, StevieNicks, and Sheryl Crow. “My mom is a championship barrel racer, and my stepdadwas a bull rider,” she recalls. Although the energy of the rodeo was intoxicating for a young KC, so was making music.  

So, by 17, with her acoustic guitar, KC and her mom headed to Nashville to make her dreams of becoming a recording artist a reality. “I just took my guitar and started hitting all the clubs on Broadway asking people if I could sing on stage,” KC adds. One thing led to another, and ultimately, she landed an offer to work on Carnival Cruise Lines as a cruise ship performer.  

 Having discovered and honed her stage legs at such a young age, KC was featured in Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” at Dollywood. However, the recording/touring artist life was calling once again, so KC took another leap of faith. “I moved to Nashville on a whim,”she explains. “I had nowhere to stay. I just packed up all my stuff and took a chance, sleeping on friends’ couches and singing on Broadway again. Before I knew it, I started meeting incredible and influential people.” She made her way up the mainstream ladder opening for artists like Luke Bryan, Chris Young, Randy Houser, Trailer Choir and Morgan Wade. KC’s now playing fairs, festivals and venues around the country.

 Chris SD started off in a band that, after its dissolution in 1996, transitioned into music production. In 2000, Chris launched his career as a music producer by building his first homestudio in Ottawa, where he began recording his friends for beer. Some of his early recordings garnered Juno Award nominations, which compelled him to relocate to Toronto in 2003. He was hired as the house engineer at the iconic Blue Rodeo’s Woodshed Studio, a position he held until 2012. During his time there, he had the opportunity to work with notable artists such as KrisKristofferson, Garth Hudson from The Band, as well as many iconic Canadian bands. Albums he worked on collectively earned 5 Juno Awards and 7 additional nominations (including Engineer of the Year). 

 In 2012, Chris relocated to Los Angeles but shortly after arriving, he and his wife discovered they were expecting their daughter. Realizing he no longer wanted to spend 12 to 14 hoursa day working in studios, Chris pivoted and started Sundown Sessions Studio, an online recording studio to balance his career and family life. He also began expanding his network within the music licensing industry, forming relationships with some of the top music supervisors for TV & film. In 2017, Chris released his program, The Art of the Song Pitch to reachindie songwriters on a much bigger scale to help them get their music placed in top shows, films, and ads. He’s now known as the “go-to guy” for musicians looking to break into the world of sync licensing. Chris not only teaches his 5-step program for pitching songs to TV and film, but also connects songwriters face-to-face with key music supervisors in the industry.

 Following her 2019 debut album, Rambling Stranger, Isabel felt both limitless and lost. “I felt like people were aware of and interested in my career in a way they hadn’t been previously and Ifroze.” Unsure of what else to do, she turned to her usual outlet and began touring extensively. Isabel embarked on an ambitious “31 Shows in 31 Days” tour in October 2019 and she found her footing along the way. Her confidence was short-lived, however, when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived and left everyone in fearful uncertainty. 

 Not one to waste time, Isabel took the opportunity to grow her family, giving birth to her first child in April 2021. “I always expected that I would just continue touring but I was suddenly presented with this opportunity to be home and relax throughout my first pregnancy. We decided to take advantage of that and I couldn’t be more grateful that we did. It was a silver lining in a difficult time.” 

 All The Light leans more toward the folk side of Isabel’s folk/Americana identity, still making use of a live band feel while also incorporating a great deal of acoustic instrumentation. The songs are both introspective and relatable, paying due respect to the fears that form us andthe freedom of letting them go.

Anne Harris is an incredible artist, a songwriter/fiddle player/vocalist, with a gorgeous new album produced by Colin Linden (Bob Dylan, Rhiannon Giddens, John Prine) that features her new violin. The violin she uses on the album is the first-ever recognized commission between two professional black women of a newly-crafted instrument in the US (and we think the world, but aren't sure about that).

Sarah Quintana is a singer-songwriter from New Orleans with a background rich in jazz, folk and popular music. She is a charming performer, devoted guitarist and her voice is instantly recognizable. Quintana splits her time between the US and France, working alongside Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil, saxophonist Raphael Imbert, touring on her own repertoire with French and American musicians. Quintana is a member of the Pantheatre (Linda Wise and Enrique Pardo) as well as a hatha yoga instructor. In her latest studio recording, Daddy Lies (Independent 2017), Quintana collaborates with Mark Bingham. 

​ Sarah Quintana grew up in New Orleans where live music is ingrained many aspects of daily life. In 2010 she went from singing on the streets of Provence with a traveling circus, to the stages of the Jazz and Heritage Festival and later, the Lincoln Center for Mid-Summer Swing with The New Orleans Moonshiners. In 2012, Quintana was awarded an artist residency at A Studio in the Woods where she composed "Miss River," music with water.

 Denver-based poet, author, musician, and spoken word artist Daniel Hayes released, "Butterfly with Bazookas," on all digital and streaming platforms September 20, 2024. Thiseleven-track collection into Hayes’ world fuses compelling storytelling and passionate musical arrangements, capturing his ability to blend deep introspection with explosive energy. Butterfly with Bazookas embodies Hayes' artistic voice, weaving together his exploration of life's extremes with powerful, unfiltered rawness. Known for his passion and talents in poetry, song lyrics, music, and the occasional memoir, Hayes has created an album that balances reflective depth with visceral expression, delivering an album that melds his creative skillsets into one.The album’s title, Butterfly with Bazookas, showcases the duality of Hayes' artistic voice. As he describes, “I chose that name for the album because I'm like a butterfly with bazookas; I’m soft-spoken, polite, even delicate at times. But, once I've made up my mind about something… It never comes easy for me, as I'm constantly weighing both sides of an issue, walking in as many shoes as possible so I'm being fair. But, once I’ve settled, I have no problem telling it like it is. Also, the title refers to how some of the tracks are quiet and gentle like ‘Ecstasy,’ ‘Redemption,’ and ‘Wake Up,’ while others are explosive, uncensored, and/or feral, such as ‘The Witch,’‘Eat Fast,’ and ‘Bullet Train.’ I think the album’s title expresses those dichotomies in one phrase.”

Nashville’s Dallas Ugly are an indie rock band of truly trusted friends, a trio who have been singing each other’s songs for over a decade. Three distinctive voices: guitarist OwenBurton observes humanity at a wry remove, chuckling, multi-instrumentalist Libby Weitnauer lifts personal experience up into catchy tunes, and bassist Eli Broxham gracefully snakes through the low end on his more melancholy contributions. Together they’ve forged an ironclad, sibling-like bond, daring each other to ever increasing heights. Their listeners - lucky - get theoverlap of their Venn diagram, the best of their crop, otherwise known as “See Me Now,” their sophomore album. 

 Though they first started playing each other’s songs back in their Chicago undergrad days, Dallas Ugly officially formed in 2020 when Owen, Libby, and Eli took a chance on relocatingto Nashville. Owen had been living in Senegal serving in the Peace Corps, Libby had established herself as an in-demand musician in New York City, and Eli was playing on frequent bluegrass and country gigs in Illinois - reunited in the Music City, they got to work, shaping both Dallas Ugly and the local scene while playing with a slew of other Nashville artists.

His formal training began with saxophone lessons under the guidance of local legend Cy Hays. We talk with Liza Lo who grew up in Spain and Amsterdam and is now living in south London where she produced her first album “Familiar.” She had some great advice, “Just keep doing it—even if you feel like there’s no point in doing it.”   

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alice Phoebe Lou,Julia Jacklin, and The Staves, Liza Lo’s sound meets an intersection where gentle folk-inspired instrumentation meets wistful indie-pop. Inspired by Liza's five-years living in South London, "Gipsy Hill" focusses on the feeling of slow separation from a place that feels like home. The forlorn tracks sees Liza's stirring vocal ruminate over the top of stripped back acoustic guitar and gentle string arrangements that swell into a poignant rush of melancholy. Speaking on the writing of the single, Liza says: "Throughout these 5 years I lost many of my close-knit relationships altered here, from true best friendship, to my parents marriage, to my own romantic love. It’s a deeply sorrowful song that describes things from my childhood kitchen, to my best friend's porch and my insular communication after coping to learn withall this change. I hope this song finds some kind of connection with people, it’s heartbreaking but I guess love is truly just everything in life and that’s why it hits home. A song for the recently brokenhearted, a song for the people that have had to get to learn to live life differently when suddenly losing their best friend to brain injury, this is Gipsy Hill."

We visited about answering the call of her heart, her big move to Nashville and the responsibility of the performer. 

 Rooster Blackspur, an award-winning singer-songwriter known for her raw, evocative voice and powerful storytelling, has never been one to follow the conventional path. Having made a name for herself in New Mexico, Rooster has now embraced a bold new chapter in Nashville, Tennessee, with her new album The Cinderella Sessions. This 7-song collection capturesthe essence of her musical evolution while introducing a fresh, Nashville-inspired sound. Recorded at the legendary Cinderella Sound Studio, The Cinderella Sessions marks Rooster's firstfull-length project in Music City - a place she believes offers her the bestchance at fully expressing her songs. 

 Reflecting on the album’s title, Rooster says, “This record is a moment in time and that moment was captured at one of Nashville's oldest working recording studios called Cinderella Sound Studio. I wanted to pay tribute to my time inside those iconic walls, as well as acknowledge my first time ever making a record in Nashville." The album’s title, The Cinderella Sessions, feels fitting not only as a nod to the historic studio but also as a symbol of her transformative journey from the expansive, rugged terrain of New Mexico to the heart of Nashville’s vibrant music scene.   

This transition didn’t happen by chance. According to Rooster, "Looking back it was fate. Someone came up to me and said 'I think you need to go to Nashville,' and the long and short of it is they paid for my studio time, and all I had to do was make my way to Nashville. Everyonesays 'I have a friend with a studio' but this person happened to be friendswith the owners of Cinderella Sound Studio. It was a life-changing experience.”Rooster’s arrival in Nashville set the stage for what would become a monumentalstep in her musical career.

Holly Lovell, crafts songs that capture aching intimacy and vulnerability through perceptive storytelling. Using a mix of both acoustic and electric guitar, Lovell’s alternative folk style songs are delivered with strong melodies and spirited conviction. She has been influenced by the lyrical prowess of artists such as Patty Griffin, Brandi Carlile and Bruce Springsteen.

  This soulful rocker, originally from Chicago, has had a passion for singing throughout her entirelife. Growing up in a household that was rich in music, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, and many more.  

Despite these modern musical influences, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. During her college years she spent a summer living inNovafeltria, Italy, learning the language and touring and studying opera. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style.   

Since moving to Nashville, Lauren has continued to tour and release new music. Her album, “Love on the Rocks” that was released in the summer of 2021 debuted at #14 on the BillboardBlues Chart, #4 on Roots Music Report & #21 on the NACC Blues Charts. Anderson has opened for bands such as Beth Hart, Ana Popovic and Mike Zito. Zito was also a featured artist on her sophomore album, on the tune "Back to Chicago". She just released her third full-length album, “Burn it all Down”, which features Albert Castiglia on the track “Zombie Blues” and JohnSalaway on “Hit The Spot.”

Canadian singer/songwriter Tara MacLean has been an internationally renowned and award winning recording and touring artist for over 25 years. She released her first album with the Nettwerk Music Group in 1996 and Sony Music Publishing Canada. Since then has been signed with Capitol Records, and EMI Canada with her JUNO nominated band Shaye. She haswritten and recorded seven solo albums and two with Shaye.    

Tara has recently received the Senate of Canada Medal for her activist work in her community. She finished a run of three summer seasons with her hit theater show that she wrote, produced, and directed called, “Atlantic Blue-The Stories of Atlantic Canada’s Iconic Songwriters” inCharlottetown. The summer of 2019 saw Atlantic Blue produced and directed by the world famous Charlottetown Festival playing three nights a week to sold out crowds. 

Tara received the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year award as well as Solo Recording of the Year for her latest album, Deeper at the PEI Music Awards. Deeper was nominated for Pop Album of the Year at ECMA 2020. Her duet with Catherine MacLellan, "This Storm", received the award for Song of the Year. She performed “Songs from Atlantic Blue” in Concert with the PEISymphony Orchestra. Last year, Tara received the Stompin' Tom award by the East Coast Music Association, marking an outstanding contribution to music in the region. 

Tara MacLean is an environmental and social justice activist, a zen student, a poet, author and a playwright. She resides in her home province of Prince Edward Island, and also lives on Salt Spring Island, BC. She considers herself bi-coastal. Her greatest joy is being a mother to herthree beautiful girls.

 When Robby Johnson came to Nashville to cut a couple of songs, he never imagined that he’d end up in the recording studio as a full-fledged artist with six of his own tunes on the project and then shooting a music video with director Ryan Smith (My Kinda Party). But life works inamazing ways sometimes, as Robby proves. 

After high school, he took a job in a manufacturing plant. The equipment noise was deafening, but against the 110-decibel background levels, Robby could sing as loud as he wanted to on his shifts. His destiny finally took form one Christmas when he received a paid demo session as apresent. The experience changed him forever. It was the first time he realizedhis voice might be special and that his songs could affect those who heardthem. In 2012, Robby decided to come to Nashville and cut more songs. So stronglydid he believe in his dream that even when the company where he worked as amanufacturers’ sales rep refused to give him time off, he took a leap of faith and moved to Nashville.

Grounded in her roots as a native Virginian, bluegrass trailblazer Rebecca Frazier found herselfreawakening to a whole new journey of inspiration and invention. Portland-based singer-songwriter Avery Hill is set to release her sophomore full-length album, The One Who Remembers, on November 1, 2024. This album marks a significant return to her roots as a storyteller and reflects Avery's profound personal journey. "The title is an introduction to myself as an artist," Avery explains. "I am not a flashy performer or a storm chaser; I am the one who remembers." She further elaborates, "Fundamentally, every artist is a 'rememberer,' and the purpose of art is to invite us all to remember what it is to be human." The album title, she adds, is also the title of the opening track and represents "a certain amount of humility" and "a truer picture of myself," emphasizing that her role is to reflect and make sense of experiences rather than seek attention.Avery's music career began in a home filled with the sounds of her parents' favorites. She recalls, "My mother bought me my first guitar and patiently listened to me rave about Joni Mitchell. My father made me mixtapes and taught me to harmonize to The Beach Boys on the radio." Originally aspiring to be a teacher, Avery's life took a creative turn after teaching in classrooms across Germany, Vermont, Washington, and Oregon. 

Avery's passion for teaching remained strong alongside her music career. "Teaching music became as fulfilling as writing and performing," she says. She started teaching ukulele in 2013 and has become a staple in Portland's ukulele community. "I strive to educate everyone's inner musician, elevate their self-knowledge and confidence, and enchant them with insight, presence, and a handful of good jokes."

Emily the band is a three-piece, queer, girl group based in central Illinois. Although they officially became a band in 2021, the love story between Emily Antonacci, Camryn Proctor, and Abbey Haste began in their teens. Reflecting on everything she had overcome, Sophie Gault found the title Baltic Street Hotel: “I used to hang out in Brooklyn a lot with my old bass player who was from Staten Island. I had returned to New York for the first time in eight, nine, ten years to promote my first album, and the Baltic Hotel is where I stayed. It felt like a homecoming. I was like, wow, I went to Nashville, I made an album. And at that point, I didn’t know I was going to make a second album, but I felt like I had accomplished something and I was proud."

The EP "Blood Lust's" writing came from a period in Melanie’s life that was marred by grief,loss, and illness. Hannah Juanita recorded ‘Tennessee Songbird’ at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN; her second full-length album following 2021’s ‘Hardliner’. Produced by Mose Wilson, the album features an all-star Nashville band with Bruce Bouton, Dennis Crouch, Chris Scruggs, Fred Eltringham, Riley Downing (The Deslondes), and more.

Hannah Juanita left her home state of Tennessee in her early twenties to break out of a stifling culture of conformity and meet the world. She travelled in search of herself, worked odd jobs, and spent countless nights singing fireside under the stars with friends, never pursuing music as a career.

Portland, Oregon-based songwriter Casey Neill talks about time zero land  (released July 26th on Fluff & Gravy Records). This album follows last fall’s Casey Neill & the Norway Rats’ Sending Up Flares, and includes two outtakes from those band sessions. Neill engineered the rest at his home studio and plays the lion's share of the instruments. It's a dreamy affair with sonic homages to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Sade, the acoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps, and the Brit-folk pioneered by Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and June Tabor. One of the things people often say about the Norway Rats is how their music defies easy genre categorization and while Sending Up Flares leans into the fruits of that collaboration, time zero land embraces the influences and craft songwriting that has been at the core of Neill's work. 

A prolific songwriter and road warrior since the late 1990s, Americana and Scots/Irish-folk influences have often underscored his songwriting. Sending Up Flares hints at a European influence too, with songs that channel everything from the cinematic sweep of golden-era U2 to the dark, complex alt-rock of PJ Harvey. If time zero land is intimate and largely acoustic, then Sending Up Flares is broad, eclectic, and every bit as explosive as its title. A four-piece string section (Bizarre Star, arranged by Kyleen King) adds a symphonic punch to “How Beautiful Am I?,” the album’s tribute to Marianne Faithfull. Synths, stacked vocal harmonies, and burbling electronics run throughout “Fall Into Forever,” bringing to life the song’s bizarre storyline involving a Tokyo typhoon, Dante’s Paradiso, and pop star Britney Spears. Together, these 11 songs shine new light on a band who, after more than a dozen years together, have arrived somewhere singular and startlingly unique.

  Teri Bracken’s career as Brontë Fall began almost accidentally. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs had always been a music obsessive, dreaming of forming her own bands and playing on stages. While working as the “door girl” at an indie music venue in Chicago, a chance opportunity allowed her to bookher first gig as an artist. She quickly came up with a band name (honoring her favorite writers, the Brontë sisters), compiled all the original songs she had, and never, ever looked back. Fall's road to acclaimed songwriter began in childhood when she picked up piano at age 7. Classical violin lessons soon followed, and eventually she was tapped as the singer/violinist in a collegerock band with a group of nineties rock loving frat boys. After leaving the guys, she further pursued her passion for violin playing at Berklee, which is where she fell in love with songwriting once and for all. Fall eventually made her way to Nashville—a dream come true considering it is a songwriter’s mecca.   

Though most of her instrumental focus is on guitar these days for pure convenience’s sake, Fall still brings out her violin and even performs on piano during her shows—she never sings a note empty handed. These live shows and releases have earned her plenty of praise, with Music Mecca noting: "Finding beauty at the end is what Brontë Fall seems to always know how to do and listeners get to follow her journey alongside her.” 

After a family tragedy struck in 2022, Fall rededicated herself to her craft, emerging with plenty of scar tissue and a batch of new songs that she considers her best yet. That lineup is highlighted by "Woman Like Me.” The track is both a reminder of Fall’s skills as asongwriter and a significant leap forward in both sound and style. It’s a defining statement, the culmination of years grinding for a shot and, at the same time, a new beginning.

 Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. Aftergraduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project The Page Turners. 

In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddlescene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts "You’re Wrong About"(Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and "You Are Good". 

 Her new album, "Each Machine", released December 6, 2024 is a collection of traditional andoriginal political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast "You’re Wrong About". These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship.

Frank Turner is an English punk and folk singer-songwriterfrom Meonstoke, Hampshire. He began his career as the vocalist ofpost-hardcore band Million Dead, then embarked upon a primarily acoustic-basedsolo career following the band's split in 2005.

Blessing Offor speaks to relatable experiences of struggle, triumph, life, and love from a distinctive perspective as a Nigerian-born, Connecticut-raised, and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. The sisters had the great pleasure of talking with William Lee Golden of Oakridge Boys fame and Australian Singer Songwriter Danni Stefanetti about their beautiful new collaboration “I’veGot My Heart on You” available everywhere! 

Oak Ridge Boy William Lee Golden debuts as a songwriter at 85 years old with “I’ve Got My Heart on You,” a heartfelt duet featuring rising star Danni Stefanetti. Inspired by his son Solomon’s words during his touring days, this song blends Golden’s legendary status with Stefanetti’s fresh talent.

William Lee Golden has long been a Renaissance man. For Stefanetti, winner of the 2023 Josie Award for Female Vocalist, getting to work with one of her musical heroes was a dream come true.

“He’s so easy to work with and it’s a bit surreal because I remember sitting backstage at the Opry watching the Oak Ridge Boys doing ‘American Made’ on my first trip to Nashville,” she says with a smile. “Working with him was a real treat and this song is so special. The melody just really hit me the first time I heard it because it is really beautiful and really touching.” 

Though written for his son, Stefanetti feels “I Got My Heart on You” will have universal appeal. “It could be a love song as well. It could be about a family member. It could even be something that William could dedicate to Rusty,” she says referring to Golden’s eldest son, who died of a heart attack on July 1, 2024. “The song encompasses all kind of relationships. It’s got such a universal appeal. I don’t think William realized that when he wrote it, but you hear it different every time you listen to it.”

The 502s are an American indie folk band from Maitland, Florida formed by Eddie Isola. Their sound has been described as a "folk orchestra", and as a blend of roots, rock and bluegrass. Their live shows received praise for “rambunctious energy, stomping sounds... and charismatic personalities” by Cowboys & Indians. 

Initially consisting of Eddie Isola and his cousins with a rotating cast of musicians, the band's longest standing consistent lineup includes Matthew Tonner (keyboards, guitars), Joe Capati(saxophone), Sean Froehlich (drums & percussion) and Nicholas Melashenko(bass guitar) with their newest member Graci Phillips joining the band in 2023.

“I’ve always backed other people,” she says. “I’m really good at supportingother musicians and holding down the fort so they can shine, but I’ve rarelyhad anybody else hold that space for me. With Storm Season, I’m investing inmyself for the first time.” 

A longtime road warrior, Tania began recording Storm Season during the globalpandemic that brought her touring schedule to a standstill. It was a rare timeof rest for someone who’d been performing since the age of 9. Raised in asingle-parent household, Tania moved from Australia to Canada during her earlychildhood and began busking on the streets of Vancouver Island while still ingrade school. 

By 15 years old, Tania had launched her own record label andcompleted her first solo album: Something, a self-financed collection ofinstrumental songs funded by her busking profits. By 16, she had left school,completed a cross-country Canadian tour in partnership with Save The Children(a humanitarian organization dedicating to supporting victims of childtrafficking), and recorded her second album, This Side Up. By the time sheturned 18, she’d already performed her songs in venues across Australia and China. 

Looking for new horizons, Tania co-founded The Duhks, a genre-jumping rootsband whose debut album appeared in 2003. The Duhks quickly became one ofCanada’s most decorated folk acts, earning a Grammy nomination and a Juno Awardduring Tania’s tenure. She left the group’s lineup in 2010 and began performingwith the celebrated folksinger Mary Gauthier. By 2013, she’d earned a permanentspot in the Avett Brothers’ touring lineup, contributing heavily to Grammy-nominated releases like True Sadness along the way. 

On a record stacked with appearances by roots-music luminaries, it’s Tania Elizabeth’s star that shines the brightest. She writes honestly and poignantly about the bad weather in her life,ultimately finding comfort in her own resilience. Heartbreak, resolve,struggle, and vigilance are common themes, with tracks like “What You Need”unfolding like wake-up-calls for those who have yet to prepare for incomingstorms. Storm Season also soothes, though, balancing itsown urgency with the comforting salve of Tania’s voice and the rootsy sweep ofher multi-layered arrangements. Right after graduation, Julie moved to Orlando, FL for her first paid gig as Ariel, in "The Voyage of the Little Mermaid."
